Like Snails,
People Wait for Evening

About the Project

This animation, created as part of the "Hoping Against Hope 2024" exhibition hosted by Monash University Library, embodies the resilient spirit deeply ingrained in Ukrainian culture.

Inspired by the evocative poem "Like Snails, People Wait for Evening" by Ukrainian poet Serhiy Zhadan, the animation captures the poem's profound themes of patience and quiet strength. Through symbolic imagery and fluid storytelling, it reflects a culture’s unwavering hope, even in the darkest times, and the enduring human capacity to keep waiting for the light.

Challenge

One of the primary challenges encountered during the animation production revolved around ensuring the authenticity and accuracy of the representation of Ukrainian culture.

This involved meticulous attention to detail in selecting colours, patterns, and scene designs to ensure they authentically reflected Ukrainian cultural elements rather than inadvertently drawing from other cultural contexts.

Approach

The production process was enriched through consultation with experts in Ukrainian culture, alongside feedback from artists deeply familiar with the nuances of Ukrainian visual identity.

By weaving their insights and expertise into every frame, the animation strives to represent the heart of Ukrainian culture with authenticity and deep respect.
